学校简介
爱丁堡大学创立于1583年，是苏格兰的第四所也是整个英语世界的第六所大学。在英国、欧洲乃至全世界教学和研究方面都处于领先地位。爱丁堡大学坐落于苏格兰首府爱丁堡市中心，校园有很多建筑，从古老辉煌的古体楼到现代化的信息大楼。在18世纪欧洲启蒙运动的浪潮中，爱丁堡大学具有相当重要的领导地位，使爱丁堡市逐渐成为学术中心之一，享有北方雅典之盛名。现在的爱丁堡大学既珍惜往日的荣誉，又在今天不断地追求、创新，以其出色而多样的教学与研究而享誉世界。爱丁堡大学每年收到四万七千份申请，为全英第三受欢迎的大学。爱丁堡大学与英国皇室保有良好关系，菲利普亲王（爱丁堡公爵）在1953到2010年担任校长，2010年至今则由长公主（Princess Royal）就任。

院系设置
2002年爱丁堡大学重新规划，将九个院系整合成为三所大学院，每个大学院再划分为不同的小学院。但爱丁堡大学并非像牛津剑桥那样是学院制大学。三所大学院分别为：人文和社会科学学院, 医学和兽医学学院, 科学和工程学院。2011年，爱丁堡艺术学院（1907年建立）,并入爱丁堡大学，与大学原有的艺术，文化和环境学院组成一所新的爱丁堡大学艺术学院。

地理环境
爱丁堡大学位于爱丁堡市中心，是公认的欧洲最富吸引力的城市之一，于2012年击败伦敦、巴黎、罗马等城市被世界旅游业联合会授予欧洲最佳旅游目的地城市，也是英国主要的社交、文化中心。
爱丁堡市是历史名城，有许多名胜古迹，如艺术长廊和音乐厅、苏格兰皇家博物馆、皇家植物园、苏格兰国家图书馆、圣伍德皇宫、议会大厦、圣支来大教堂、爱丁堡古城堡等等。城中一半以上的场所是露天的，如皇后公园、亚瑟剧院等。
